Chinese President Xi Jinping said Thursday that China will remain determined to expand high-level openness, share development opportunities with the world and make economic globalization more open, inclusive, balanced and beneficial for all.

Xi made the remarks while speaking on video at the opening ceremony of the fourth China International Import Expo.

“China will firmly defend true multilateralism,” said Xi.

Xi noted that the multilateral trade regime with the World Trade Organization (WTO) is at the heart of international trade and pledged to help WTO reform go in the right direction.

“We support the inclusive development of the multilateral trade regime and the legitimate rights and interests of evolving members,” he said.

In his keynote address, Xi promised that the country would firmly share market opportunities with the rest of the world.

“China will place more emphasis on expanding imports and pursuing balanced development of trade in the future,” he said, adding that measures such as opening more demonstration zones to creatively promote import trade and increasing imports from neighboring countries will be taken.

Xi pledged to strongly encourage high-level opening up and said the country would take steps including further shortening the negative list for foreign investment and revising and expanding the encouraged industry catalog.

“China will firmly represent the common interests of the world,” said Xi, noting that the country is actively participating in cooperation within the United Nations, WTO, G20, Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, Shanghai Cooperation Organization and others become institutions.

He also said China will support the equitable distribution and unhindered trade in vaccines and other vital medical supplies around the world.
